# Material Damping
The idea behind material damping is that some vibrational source is dampened through the structure of the material. The vibrational energy dissipates as heat when the structure moves and bends. The amount of energy that transforms into heat depends on the material properties. Stiff materials such as a wineglass cannot bend a lot and thus can break fast when it starts resonating (this is the reason wineglasses make a nice sound when hit). Soft elastic materials like rubber dissipate the energy much faster (just a short thumb sound when hit).
Together with [[Friction Damping]], this concept is important when designing [[Drone|drones]], since vibration is one of the core issues that reduce performance of drones.
