# Friction Damping
The idea of friction damping is that vibrations are not directly transmitted from one object to the other if they are connected only by friction.
![[Pasted image 20260121121234.png]]
If the orange plate (1) vibrates, the clamping structure in red (2) will vibrate less because some energy is dissipated as heat through the friction process.
I encountered this concept here: [The Hidden Tech In Freestyle Drones... - YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17ibhclhzhw)
It is related to [[Material Damping]], where the inherent properties of the material dissipate Energy as Heat when its bending and transforming

# Material Damping
The idea behind material damping is that some vibrational source is dampened through the structure of the material. The vibrational energy dissipates as heat when the structure moves and bends. The amount of energy that transforms into heat depends on the material properties. Stiff materials such as a wineglass cannot bend a lot and thus can break fast when it starts resonating (this is the reason wineglasses make a nice sound when hit). Soft elastic materials like rubber dissipate the energy much faster (just a short thumb sound when hit).
Together with [[Friction Damping]], this concept is important when designing [[Drone|drones]], since vibration is one of the core issues that reduce performance of drones.
